On 26th September 2008, the production version of the Volt was unveiled to the world. Set to launch in North America in late 2010, the Volt not only delivers on the promises made in its concept phase, but goes beyond them to increase efficiency and quality.
Thousands of hours of testing have lowered its wind resistance, improved its road performance, and increased the range of its lithium-ion battery cells. Take a closer look right here.
Outside, the Volt keeps many of the design cues that made the original concept so striking. A more rounded front, tapered corners, custom rear spoiler and raked front and rear windscreens further reduce wind resistance, allowing the Volt to reach its target of driving up to 40 miles without using a drop of petrol.
Step inside, and the Volt’s liquid crystal displays, touch-screen infotainment, and USB/Bluetooth connections create the most advanced interior of any Chevrolet. All with generous seating for four people, plus a wide range of colour and trim options.
The production Volt isn’t a hybrid, but an entirely new class of car — an “E-REV” or Extended-Range Electric Vehicle. It’s the first vehicle in history to use electric power as its primary energy source, courtesy of a 16 kWh, “T”-shaped lithium-ion battery pack. After 60km, a range-extending engine, powered by petrol or E85 Ethanol, generates additional electricity to power the Volt for hundreds of miles. Because this engine only charges the battery, the fuel savings are immense. Just look at these fast facts:
